National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is an annual campaign to educate the public about the realities of eating disorders and to provide hope, support, and visibility to the individuals and families affected.

I spent over a decade of my life trying to survive an eating disorder during my formative years, and my most popular song is about struggling with disordered behaviors and their consequences. My perfect storm of undiagnosed neurodivergence and gender dysphoria made it difficult for me to recover until recently. But, recovering saved my life.

So, I'm excited to provide others with a decorative and discrete wearable they can have in times of stress. Sometimes called 'stimming' or 'fidget' tools, objects like these are used by those with conditions like anxiety, ADHD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder to help stimulate and regulate the nervous system. This helps to make unpleasant feelings more tolerable, ultimately helping minimize the emotional or sensory overwhelm which can lead to negative behaviors.

This limited-run necklace features an 18-inch stainless steel chain threaded through a skull charm. While this charm can be opened and removed from the chain, its sturdy hinge and click-closure make it unlikely to open without concerted effort. This piece has a classic lobster-claw clasp, but if you would prefer this replaced with another type of closure for accessibility reasons please send me an email after your purchase detailing your needs.

I chose a skull not to emphasize the gravity of eating disorders, but as a nod to the only perspective which helped me recover. This is best encapsulated by the Latin phrase "memento mori," which translates to "remember that you (have to) die." This reminder of the inevitability of death is what pushes me to stay recovered and manage my health. Though our suffering can at times feel endless, life is short, and tomorrow is never guaranteed. Rather than wasting what little time I may animate this body by destroying myself, I choose every day to fight to enjoy my time on earth.

50% of proceeds from these necklaces will be donated to Project HEAL, a registered 501c3 organization which seeks to break down systemic, insurance, and financial barriers to eating disorder treatment for those that the American mental healthcare system is failing. I am fundraising specifically for their LGBTQIA+ Treatment Equity project. LGBTQ+ identified people experience unique challenges - like social rejection, discrimination, higher rates of homelessness and/or assault, trauma, body image pressures, and body discordance - which lead to higher rates of eating disorders. Furthermore, many treatment contexts are gender- and heteronormative, which contributes to high rates of treatment being more harmful than helpful. Project HEAL seeks to improve these conditions through treatment placement, insurance navigation, and direct cash assistance.

The other 50% will help fund my ongoing project Allegory of The G/rave, an album and short film retelling Medusa's story in hopes of empowering survivors, queer people, the neurodivergent, and others who feel outcast around the world. Throughout 2022, I aim to involve as many LGBTQIA+ artists (many of whom are struggling because of the pandemic) as possible, prioritizing the fair wage they deserve. So, raising every penny counts. Additionally, here is the direct donation link to the Eating Disorders Coalition (EDC) which focuses primarily on informing and influencing federal policy on eating disorders in the United States. The EDC has impacted such legislation as the Anna Westin Act of 2015 and the Mental Health Parity Bill of 2008, which helped improve coverage of eating disorder treatment by public health insurance. Making mental health treatment more accessible financially is crucial to saving lives.
